The foundation of Lav & Kush's inspiration is to provide beautiful clothing in fabrics that are produced in an organic and/or a sustainable fashion. As the demand grows for health and wellness for the people and the planet we will be seeing this as a new movement, not just a trend. Our mission is to always choose the environmentally friendly and natural fibers whenever possible. We also have a strong commitment towards fashion and style, and place a huge importance on the aesthetics; luxurious to touch and feel, fantastic drape, and quality of yarn.
For the Spring 2008 collection we choose bamboo, organic cotton and soy blends in the softest jersey we could find. The bonus being that they are less harmful on the earth!
Why Bamboo?
Bamboo is an amazing tree like grass; it is grown without harmful chemicals, and can regenerate itself within 3 to 7 years. It is biodegradable and completely sustainable. It is the world's fastest growing grass and can shoot up more than a foot per day! When harvesting bamboo, it is cut from the stalk, with its roots firmly in tact, constantly growing new shoots while preserving the topsoil. It is naturally microbial, and has amazing breathing properties. Some say that it is cooler than cotton in the summer, yet at the same time, it is an incredibly warm, cozy fabric. Bamboo comes from bamboo farms (no, we are not taking away Panda food!) and the cultivation provides income for many housholds in Asia. We love it for its sustainability!
Why Soy?
Soy yarns are made from the protein of the soybean and is a by product of the tofu industry. Soy crops do not require pesticides and herbicides again making it a sustainable. The hand of Soy fabric is ultra soft, has excellent moisture absorption properties and is breathable. It also biodegrades at a faster rate than petroleum derived fabrics like polyester.
Why Organic Cotton?
Organic cotton is produced under stringent regulations and must be certified by a regulated third party. It is grown without pesticides and herbicides, and maintains soil fertility. It is documented that regular conventional cotton accounts for up to 8%-10% of global pesticides and insecticides. Each year, pests exposed to synthetic pesticides build up a resistance to them, resulting in farmers having to use more chemicals in the growing of conventional cotton. Organic cotton farmers use natural pesticides that are very effective in warding off pests without hurting the environment. Supporting organic cotton is supporting well being for the land and the farmers. Switching to organic cotton is incredibly important for the health and wellbeing of the planet!
We also love Hemp, Lyocell (Tencel/Modal), silk and wool among others. Some of these fibers are not labeled as "eco - friendly" but still have a low negative impact on the environment. |
